Patience And Persistence

May 2, 2011

As we all have heard by now, Osama Bin Laden has been captured and killed in Pakistan at the hands of U.S. Military Special Forces. The news came as a relief to those who lost loved ones at the hands of the notorious terrorist and the organization he represents. You will hear plenty about this story in the coming days and weeks so I’ll spare you my take on all of it and instead focus on a lesson that I think we can all appreciate in the story itself.

Two words come to mind in describing how the U.S. handled the capture and execution of this well-known global terrorist: Patience and Persistence. It took nearly 10 years to find him, and it would seem that it’s an extraordinarily long time to find the world’s most wanted man but finally the promise made is now fulfilled. However, let’s analyze the following question carefully: How many people out there would have given up after nearly 10 years of trying achieve their objective? How many people would have given up long before 10 years? It was the persistence of the U.S. that nurtured the patience in meeting their objective. There’s something about someone who doesn’t give up when so many others would have that gives them the edge that others don’t have. The determination to finish the job after so many disappointments and dead ends. This is not the U.S. first try at capturing Osama and I’m sure there were often feelings of hopelessness and doubt as to when/if they would ever meet their objective but the persistence to succeed silenced those whispers of uncertainty and disappointment.

It’s a proud day for the U.S.A. and the world when a known criminal against humanity is brought to justice. However, it is an added gift when a lesson in the story is also provided. The proof that when patience and persistence are applied in harmony, you can reach even the most elusive of goals.

Something to think about as we start off the work week.

Make it a great Monday,
